Rental car options

Just doing some research for a trip to mt rushmore. Wondering what or if anyone here has any info about rental car options, (availability, where the closest place to get one is...etc..) We are thinking of staying at the mt rushmore KOA I know that they have 10 rental cars available at the park, but it is a first come first served deal

  • Try to avoid airports for car rentals if at all possible as their rates are higher plus you get to pay a lot of gov't. imposed taxes that you are not subject to with off-airport rentals. This can make the total rental 25-50% higher.
Usually online has the best rates. If you are sure about your reservation, Hertz has a "pay now" option that discounts the rate substantially.
  • There are rental cars available at the Rapid City airport. Type in rental cars, Rapid, City, SD at any search website and you'll find a list for availability for several companies. During certain times of year you'll need to reserve long in advance. Tourist season in the Black Hills is very busy!
  • Also check Zipcar; recently purchased by Enterprise or Avis; has a different business model than most car rental companies. You don't pay for gas and can rent by the hour or day. Useful for short term rentals.
  • Enterprise advertises at most RV Resorts with free pickup to take you to the rental office. Of course these RV resorts are close to major tourist destinations or cities.

We've used Enterprise often when out in the RV and a rental car was needed.
  • Before our toad days we used Enterprise. They have locations in many places and will come and pick you up.
