renting out your RV

When we bought our first RV, wife and I decided no way! It was easy to answer. Our answer (we both say it):
"Our insurance doesn't allow renting or loaning. If it is out, we need to be in it. That's why the insurance cost has been so reasonable."

That has worked. We had been asked in the past, but have not had that question in years.

I would rent mine, but it would actually be cheaper for the renter to just go buy a new one.

There are some practical concerns why I would not rent or loan out my TT:

1) Knowing how to tow safely is a skill acquired through experience. If someone is renting a TT, that means they probably don't own their TT. Which means little or no towing experience. If you rent your house out, the renters might do some damage but aren't able to uproot it and drive it into someone else's house or vehicle!

2) Most TTs are built so flimsy that you have to be extra gentle with the internal furnishings, etc. We are careful but still have broken things in our TT due to "lightweight (read cheap)" hardware.

If I ever did loan it out it would be to trusted friends for local area use, where I would tow it there and back for them.

I would rent my house before I would rent my travel trailer; but not to my kids.

We spent a lot of extra cash to have a NEW RV that didn't stink, look beat up and know that we were the only ones to have used it. We plan on keeping it that way too.

I probably wouldn't rent out my current RV, but I do own 2 right now and I like smkettner's idea of renting out the old one. I'm also starting an RV inspection business, so I could sell the Monterey to the business and use it there to do trailer inspections, for which I'd need a tow vehicle at least to power up the rig I'm inspecting. Rental income goes to the business along with the expenses.

Wow - there are 3 for rent within 25 miles of me. All newer models too. Not for me though. Imagine seeing a stranger towing your TT away. Did you set up the WDH? Did they? Did they do it right? Just the first 3 of hundreds of questions that pop into my head.

Ours is almost in as good of shape as it was when new----Why----because we don't have overnight guest and would not even let renting it cross our minds.
As a matter of fact I don't care if it was 50 foot long with two king beds it only would sleep two adults and two dogs.

It's hard enough maintaining our motorhome with only us using it .... let alone guessing how it's been treated and what it will, or will not, need maintenance-wise after someone else has used it.

Motorhome RVs are too complicated to let out of the owner's sight ... they're way beyond just a sedan, or SUV, or pickup truck.
