Repair Black Tank

We have a 1 1/2 inch crack in the black tank along the bottom reinforecment ribs. I did a search on this forum about repairing black tanks and found recommendations for Plasti Mend or Eternabond tape. Which would you suggest, or do you have any other suggestions. Thanks!

  • Plasti Mend is the stuff to use for ABS plastic repairs. It is basically thickened ABS cement. Sometimes Oatley ABS cement can be purchased at Home Depot or Lowes. Depends on location. It is much cheaper than Plasti Mend with shipping. A little 4oz can is about $3. The patch can be reinforced with fiberglass cloth (4oz or 6oz). You can even melt down ABS shavings in acetone to make your own glue.
Eternabond tape will NOT provide a lasting repair. It WILL create a huge mess when it comes time to fix the leak correctly.
  • Thanks for the suggestions. DH used Plasti Mend and it seems to have worked. We ordered it from Amazon since we couldn't find it at any RV dealership. I guess they would rather have us purchase a new tank. DH said the instructions were clear and it went on easily.
  • Use West Systems G-Flex epoxy and fiberglass.
The G-Flex epoxy is made specifically for plastics and regular epoxy won't adhere to plastic.

  • Years ago I repaired my holding tank with fiber glass repair kits. You will have to drill small holes at each end of the crack. This keeps the crack from getting any larger. I then used a wire brush attachement on my drill to rough up the surface of the tank. Make sure the surface is dry and clean. The hardest part was working against gravity, plan on getting the fiber glass stuff all over. The end result was great.
  • I had a small crack in our 32 gal blue tote. I used a kit I purchased at a trailer parts store. It was fiberglass cloth and epoxy. It made a strong and leak free patch. Two things that will make a repair like that a success are a clean surface and it has to be dry. After four years it is still doing well.
  • You may get lucky and be able to glue it back together but the real problem may be that the original tank may not have been supported properly
