Depending on the vehicle, that's actually wrong. My 2006 F250 V10 had a fuel pressure sensor that interfaced with the computer. The only way to read fuel pressure was with a scanner. When I was having fuel pump issues, it was throwing codes about low fuel pressure. The OBD-II specification has codes for fuel pressure.
I was surprised to learn that the 2006 V10 had a variable pressure fuel pump controlled by the computer. There was no return fuel line from the engine. It only pumped what it intended to use.
When I had to replace the fuel pump on that truck, first time they replaced the fuel filter. Then the pump. Then 1000 miles later the complete sending unit, including pump. They forgot to hook up the fuel fill, which I discovered when I went to gas up. Then they used the wrong sending unit so the fuel gauge read weird. I hate the runaround. When I get the runaround, I find someone else.
