Replacement mattress

We are just returning from a 4 month trip to Alaska and the mattress in our 5th wheel will probably need to be replaced when we get home. My side of the mattress has an indent in it after I lay on it a while and when I try to turn over during the night it is like trying to turn over in an army cot. I am looking for recommendations on whether to replace the mattress or get one of those 3" memory foam mattress toppers......

  • We bought a Spa Sensations Gel Memory Foam 8" mattress from Walmart for around $200. They have several different thicknesses, from 6" - 12" and are priced accordingly. It's as good, or better than our TempurPedic is for 1/10 the price.

If it is a standard size King or Queen find what you like at a mattress store.
  • We replaced ours a few years ago. After much research I went with Love My Mattress in Greenville, SC. They actually mfg ours to our specs which was firmer than usual. It is shipped vacuum sealed and comes UPS. I will tell you that the warning on the package says DO NOT UNWRAP UNTIL IN PLACE means what it says. Once I got it into the fiver and on in place I opened it and there she goes.

Ours has really been a good one as we still have it to this day and we travel quite a bit.
  • On a recent trip I became incredible hulk-angry at the state of our (original to the rig) mattress. I was done with feeling the not-so-gentle caress of every single coil spring and waking up every morning feeling like my hips were dislocated.

The campground we were at (which is a huge, sprawling place with a big seasonal population) actually had just opened a "furniture" store for the seasonal residents and they actually had RV-sized mattresses. This was advertised in the packet we got when we pulled in, but i hadn't read it. The wife, fortunately, had. I Couldn't get down to that store fast enough. That night I slept better (in the camper) than I maybe ever had!
  • our mattress is good but too firm so we opted for 4 inch memory foam topper
  • We went with a 6 inch high quality foam but it ended up being a little too firm so we added a 2 inch egg crate type foam and it's fantastic. The large foam places will sometimes have various types of foam on display for you to lay on. We are sort of crazy about our beds as we get older.

The days of waking up on a damp tent floor with a deflated air mattress and jumping back on the dirt bike are long gone.
