Replacing front external leds?

But isn't the intended purpose of those lights on the front of the trailer for lighting up the hitch area?

I think they're more of a "front of the camper area" light. The hitch itself has a different light directly on it.

Ask your dealer, I don't have an Apex but I think I have the same type of LED strip lights you are talking about on the front of mine. Mine started to peel off and the dealer replaced them under warranty. Just so you know, mine are wired from the middle of the strip, as that is the lowest point in the line and the switch is in the pass thru storage.

I like my "unneeded" lights, I use them cause I like them.

The wiring connects to one end of the LED strip, easy location to find.

I see. Could be that no one has replaced them before, but I think you have the right idea.
