Here in New Jersey, reserve America hits you with a cancelation fee of two full nights cost, so typically $40-50 cancelation fee. This results in most weekend campers not canceling, because there is no financial incentive to. I've spent many weekends here where park is 100 percent booked, but 20 percent of sites vacant, but tagged with a name.
Reserve America doesn't "hit you" with any cancellation fee. New Jersey decides what the fee structure charged to the customers will be. RA has a set fee structure they charge the states or private parks that varies depending on which services they contract for. Whether those fees get absorbed into the site pricing or separately charged to the customers is the state or parks decision. There used to be no reservation fee for Florida state park reservations for instance, until a couple of years ago when they started adding on a $6.70 fee. RA didn't decide that, the state of Florida did. RA's per reservation charge to the state didn't change.
