Road Trip 1 - EZ Pass?

My first real road trip 650 miles one way. Can I use EZ pass? I know they charge more for having the trailer. How does that work? Traveling from NJ to Indiana. I have a 26 foot trailer with 2 axles.
  • 1st, I tow a travel trailer. Don't know what you tow. 2nd, I have just one transponder. Here is what I found out.

Delaware Memorial Bridge - Pay cash. The bridge authority even recommends it. I got charged for a tractor trailer, and had to fight for a refund.

    Delaware Memorial Bridge Authority wrote:
As a vehicle enters a Delaware Memorial Bridge toll lane, the toll system reads both the number of axles and the vehicle profile. If a customer is towing a trailer or is operating a large recreational vehicle and enters a dedicated E-ZPass lane, the system may register the transaction at a commercial rate. To eliminate the potential for a misclassification, the DRBA advises customers to pay the toll manually. The E-ZPass transponder must be removed before entering the lane and placed in the read proof bag during the transaction.

In addition, all E-ZPass customers should always check their statements to make sure that the charges are accurate and immediately report any discrepancies to their customer service center. This alert does not apply to campers or RVs with dual tires.

MassPike - I pay cash. Once again, they charge me for tractor trailer. Made the mistake TWICE. I go through cash lanes with my EZpass.

NYS Thruway - I go through a booth with a worker and confirm that I am being charged the correct rate. For me, it is 4L, meaning 4 axles, low profile (7'6" or less over 1st 2 axles).
  • NY does not count the axles. I have two EZ-Pass transmitters, one for towing the trailer and one for running solo.
I've used it on the Mass Pike and PA turnpike besides NY.
  • EZPass works from the east coast to the west side of Illinois. If you have an Ohio EZ Pass, you enjoy lower tolls on the Ohio turnpike. Register all your vehicles online, including trailers. The toll booths weigh and count axles, and charge the appropriate fee.
  • Thanks all! It's a little scary they can sense all that. I best not have a beer on the dash. LOL. Oh I kid.
  • Yes, most/all of toll roads along your path will accept E-ZPass. The E-ZPass equipped toll booths sense the number of axles (technically, they count wheels) as you pass through, and charge the appropriate per axle toll for your vehicle class. E-ZPass tolls are typically a little lower than cash tolls.
  • I believe that the Ohio and Indiana turnpikes accept EZ Pass. I know that the eastern turnpikes, for the most part, accept Illinois's I-Pass, which we were able to use in Ohio & Indiana as well.
