Route planners

I see there are several route planing software on the market. M/S Streets and trips (That is no longer produced) Delorme Street Atlas and Rand McNally route planner. I have used Delorme and M/S programs for my car and both have there good and bad points. I have never used the Rand McNally program. I am looking for input from people who have used these programs and can help me choice witch on is the best for some one who is driving a truck pulling a 5th wheel. Thanks

  • We switched from Delorme Street Atlas 10.0 To Garmin's mapsource. Plan the routes on the computer, view quirks in Google Earth. When routes are to our satisfaction they get uploaded to the GPS. Newer Garmin GPS's call them trips just to confuse things.
  • I use an old copy of Delorme Street Atlas 8.0 to plan my routes. I've used it to plan most of our longer trips, including stops; some trips have been over 5000 miles.

Once I have my mileages and whatnot, I create a spreadsheet with GPS coordinates that I send to my smart phone. I simply click on the coordinates of our next destination, and Google gets me there.
  • we bought the Rand McNally RVND and used it for a couple years, then when we got an iPhone, per the recommendation of this forum, we now use the CoPilot app.
The Rand McNally was "ok" - it wasn't as user friendly as the CoPilot app. and there was a bit of a learning curve but once we got used to it it did fine.
  • I am currently working on this Summer's 6,000 mile loop from Orlando to the Bay of Fundy and back and am using Good Sam Trip planner.

I see your GS membership on your profile so just go to the www.goodsamclub.com website and give it a try (log in first if you have not already so you can save your work). The new version has some quirks, but you can adjust routes and it will provide low clearance, propane restriction, and other warnings if you turn that feature on.

I'm finding it about as useful as any I have tried. I do wish I could print maps, particularly large scale maps of in-town twists and turns, but havn't found a way yet.

  • We use Maps.yahoo.com and click and drag the suggested route to make it better for us.
We also have a Garmin gps.
