If you're pulling in normal temps on normal hills, 4000 is just fine but if you get into extreme temps or steep long hills you might think of manual selection of your selected gear and driving your temperature gauge. When we're pulling some long steep grades in West Virginia (up to 12%) and on the way to Alaska I downshift into each lower gear to keep coolant temp where I want it. By then selecting my desired RPM (4000 in your case) I take whatever speed it gives me. In my latest Allegro Bus the engine/transmission programming happens to do this almost perfectly, but in former rigs, it was necessary to do it manually. Gas or Diesel, the numbers will vary, but the technique is the same.
When we head to Alaska, we're 43,000 pounds pulling a 8000 pound toad. Somewhat less in WVA mountains, but the WVA mountains are steeper.
Where is this long 12% grade at?
US 33, US 250 and US 220, then start on the feeder roads in or around the Monongahela National Forest.
