RV ANTIFREEZE

(Save the comments on whether it is better to use RV antifreeze VS blowing out the lines...I don't need them)

I have some old, probably 3-6 years old, of UNOPENED RV antifreeze that has never been used...I'm assuming it would still be OK to use this stuff now?

At $4 or less per gallon and seeing I use ~ 2 gallons I will spend the $8 for piece of mind...

The MSDS (now they're called SDS - your government at work) wouldn't contain shelf life data. It's designed to provide guidance on proper handling, flags point boiling point freeze point, etc as well as DOT information.

You took the right approach though...for a few bucks why chance it?
  • I haven't found anything to indicate any sort of property change over time in propylene glycol, the principle ingredient in most RV anti-freeze. The small amount of dipotassium phosphate anti-corrisive sometimes added to it might lose some effectiveness over time, but that doesn't do much of anything in our typically non-metallic RV plumbing anyway. I would, and have, used propylene glycol based RV anti-freeze that's several years old with no ill effects.
  • I buy a case every 4 years, 6 gallons, and use 1 1/2 gallons per year. It sits in the garage before use and has never jelled up yet. I'd use it. Have never had a problem.

Ace Hardware just had it for $2.99/gallon.

  • I look at it this way. I had some old stuff in my garage and it did not freeze last year and my garage got very cold with the winter we had in Michigan. My dad had it in his shed in Trenton...not too far from you M GO BLUE. In fact now I realize that I used some it last year for the past winter.

    snip-it:

....so check with the suppler to be sure of its life expectancy.
I’m sure the producer of that brand will have what’s called an MSDS sheet that should help shed some light on its lifespan....
