A great website is gasbuddy.com which posts prices for different grades of gas and diesel and lists them by town or zip code and shows when the prices were reported and has a way to show them on a map which can be zoomed out to show an entire metro area or state or the entire USA.
I use it to find local stations and save $0.20 to $0.50 per gallon and when traveling to spot the best stations along the route. My wife took a trip north to Oroville over the weekend and I found a place 20 miles south in Yuba City that was $0.35 a gallon cheaper and only a block off the main highway. I found a place 10 miles north of Paso Robles, where I go a lot to sample the local wines, that is $0.55 cheaper for diesel than any station in town and a full dollar cheaper than the town of Cambria which is usually where we stay. That amounts to a savings of from $6 to $15 per fillup at the pumps. Not a huge savings but one that is painless to get.
