we went through pretty much the same exercise a couple of years ago .... we spend a couple of months each summer in South Dakota and decided to raise a couple of tomato plants .... unfortunately, it didn't work for us .... if we were to ever do something like this again I believe we would go much different types of plants .... I believe onions, radishes, leaf lettuce, raised in pots would be much easier
