I was doing Home Inspections in a ski area and was surprised at the super efficient propane FA units. The exhaust ducts for these units are generally Sch 40 PVC. They have sealed burner chambers and draw the ambient air from the exterior of the house through PVC pipe just like the exhaust piping. The older FA units drew their air from the room where it was located and ducted out through sheet metal rolled vent pipe.
The difference in initial cost was about 100 percent higher for a heater in the 95 percent efficiency range than a standard 1970 or 80 heater. The exhaust gases of the old low efficiency units is like the exhaust of RV units, VERY hot. The high efficiency units exhaust gases were barely above body temps.
So other than the extreme initial cost, what does all this mean, simply put, it takes up a lot of room that RVs normally don't have and the market to develop a small 95 percent efficient heater just is not there.
