RV Travel Up???

Don't know if this is an isolated case or a trend. But a heads up anyway.
We always stop at a particular RV park in Amarillo on our annual trip to Colorado. Wife loves the extensive gift shop (and there is a Gander Mountain just behind the park for me. :)) Normally I just call when on the way to make sure they have a space available. And they have always had one. We are not leaving until the end of next week, but for some unknown reason I decided to call yesterday to check availability. Guy checked and said they had one space left for Friday night. I took it. I asked if RV travel was up and he said they had been booked solid almost every night and turning people away for the last several weeks.
So if there is some place you particularly want to stay in the coming weeks, you might want to check availability before you plan to arrive.

  • When we went to Florida on spring break the resort we usually go to was totally full and it was only the first week of April. I see a lot of MH's, rvs on the major highways near our home.
  • The economy is still stinking, but there is pent up demand for vacations, even if it is just road trips. With the fact that bedbugs are a menace, people are willing to pay the price for a decent RV just to have their own bed.

Then there is the fact that alternative vacations are becoming less of an option. Cruises have had bad press, airplane travel is a nightmare, and Disney World hiked their rates so a ticket is about a C-note/day. So, having a decent RV and being able to take trips is something that is coming back.

Here in Central Texas, CGs are packed. To boot, new RV parks are springing up to handle the demand.

How long will it last? Likely a while -- gas isn't getting any cheaper which gets people to roam close to where they live.
  • I think it's up do to people wanting a less expensive way to vacation. With everything that has happened over the last couple of years I believe that people want to connect more with what America has to offer and spend more time with family. I know events for us over the last 9 months made it very important that we take the 5 weeks and visit the Western US and spend time with family. Can't wait to leave in 12 days.
  • • RV shipments to retailers rose 31.8% in February above January’s totals and were up 24.2% over February of last year.

    • The 24,600 units reported in the latest survey of manufacturers marked the best February in four years.

    • The two-month total, which also included a 5.1% increase in RV shipments in January, were 15.2% above last year for the same period.

  • We were in Ut.the last week of April on Hwy.12 and all the popular campgrounds were full, we just boondock and had no problem finding a place.
  • News reports have indicated travel within the US is up due to the poor economy, cruise problems and turmoil in other countries. More folks are taking car and RV trips instead of flights or cruises this year.
