RV Trip Planning

My wife and I are planning a two month trip in our 19 foot travel trailer this coming March and April. We consider this a test run, if at the end of the trip we are still married and both loving this experience, we will plan to sell the travel trailer and get a 5th wheel. So during these months, how should I go about the planning process? We live in central Oregon and for the first two days of driving we will be heading south to warmer areas. We will plan to head through southern CA, AZ, NM, TX, LA. Do we need to make reservations in advance? If so, how much in advance? Using KOA and Good Sam information. Is there other places to get helpful information? Please share your suggestions and experiences. Also, if you have suggested places for us to visit or stay. Thank you in advance for your assistance.

  • While you have a 19' trailer I would try some remote areas. When you get a 5er you may be to big to fit. COE sites, state parks, you might even try some Boondocking.
  • Based on my experience, I would not make reservations days in advance. We travelled for three months this summer, and would usually call ahead around noon to 1:00 the day we expected to arrive. We always got a spot this way. However, quite often when we'd arrive to check in around 5pm, others would be pulling in and there was no place for them.

I see that you're a Good Sam member. Go to their website and use the trip planner. It's a great tool for laying out your excursion.

If you get close to Tucson, send me a PM and I'll give you some great places to stay and some terrific attractions to see.
