While on paper it might looks like a good idea, there is way too much that can go wrong. What you are proposing is NOTHING like VRBO.
Firstly, if you're renting a vacation home through VRBO, the person you are renting to more than likely can not disappear with your home. You'll have absolutely no control over what route they are going to take to get to your destination, and really very little recourse if they don't even make it there. You'll go through quite a headache if you're expecting someone to drop off your RV in Texas and find out, if you ever find out, that they're all the way up in Maine.
Just because someone may have a clean driving record and background check does not mean that they are a good driver, or even capable of handling an RV.
You want to make sure that you're doing this with someone who is experienced with being using an RV. Ok. How will you verify this? Sure, I can tell you I've owned my own RV for years, but you have no way of verifying this to be fact.
If this is a "free" transaction, what motivation is there for the person to take care of your equipment? I don't think anyone out there is going to be willing to hand over private individual a $2000 security deposit, for example. Would you be at ease with $500? I certainly wouldn't.
If something were to go seriously wrong, how would you go about rectifying it? Since all these rentals are "free", would you be able to afford to hire a good lawyer to go after someone like the rental RV places could, considering that they are a business which makes an income and probably have lawyers on their payroll?
You can go through each and every user on this site and I'll bet you wouldn't find more than 5 people who would be willing to let FAMILY use their RV (for free or not), let alone handing it over to a stranger in exchange for them getting it to any given location. If you honestly think that this is something that would work, well best of luck to you. There may be a ton of people who would be willing to take someone up on the offer of a free rental, I just don't see too many people wanting to offer up their RV for this type of thing, regardless of the need to get it moved.
