My point is, nothing would have changed for the OP if the original purchaser HAD shown up. If I purchase something (a campsite, a concert ticket, ANYTHING)...it is up to ME to decide what to do with it, up to and including NOTHING.
I also see nothing wrong with what Dave54 is doing. He is paying for additional days (one early, one late); it is his decision on how to use those days; no one else's. Again, if I am paying for something, it is up to me on how to use it. The only possible problem is with the half-price issue; he is paying for 1 add'l day and getting 2.
Personally, I dislike the middle of the day check in/check out times anyway; it makes no sense to me. Either make it early in the morning, or late in the afternoon/evening. That way, I actually get to camp for the ENTIRE weekend, rather than spending Sunday morning loading up to leave at noon (or forcing me to buy add'l days like Dave54).
I think where we disagree is your right to do nothing with the site.
Would it be OK for Bill Gates to rent the entire campground for the entire holiday weekend andintentionally not show up because he could afford to?It may be legal but not right.
Furthermore the rules state you must occupy site within the 1st 24 hours. I believe if no one shows after 24 hours and no contact as been made, than the site should be available to others.
Unfortunately many people are not available to arrive at the last minute and the sites goe unused which is a shame and the point of the thread.
I can see one or 2 sites remaining open do to unforeseen circumstances but several sites being open smells of abuse of selfishness
