RVers who buy up campsites

We went to camp at a nice state park just north of Denver. Got a site for the first night, then for the second night we drove over to another open site that was on the water and had a better view. No tag on the post. When my wife went to pay for the site, she was told that it had already been rented by another person who had paid for five nights.

The site remained vacant the whole time we were at the campground. Evidently the person just drove to the office, paid for the site and left. Didn't even bother to drive over to it to put his tag on the post. He or she paid for five nights on a Tuesday, most likely so they would be sure to have it for the week-end.

This park is very popular and even at this time of year is fully occupied almost every night. Also, during the off-season about half of the sites are closed. By the rules, the person should have occupied the site on the first night, but otherwise there is no violation in what he did.

I know that I have been accused of being a "typical selfish ranter", but I believe that this is an example of thoughtless greed. I hope the people who read this post and do this will learn to be able to think of someone besides yourselves, and realize that you are denying other people the chance to go camping.

As they say, "OK, rant over. Take your best shot."

  • In TN state parks, if your site is not occupied the first night of the reservation, your reservation is cancelled.

If the weekend was open when the reservation was made... why couldn't the person just reserve the weekend? Reserving early is pointless, if what you want is the weekend and the weekend is open.
  • It's a first come, first serve, dog-eat-dog world we live in. If they paid the "rent" they can do anything they want with the site, even if that means not showing up. If you want the site, reserve it for some time in the future so you are guaranteed to have it. It's just the way it is. Someone simply beat you to it!
  • A very reasonable post IMO. Why keep the site if you cannot use it?
Then there's the people that get extra sites to improve their view or increase their privacy and that's just keeping someone else from enjoying the resource.
