I was there four years ago and stayed for two months. . . although I did not sign up for the caravan deal that offers available rigs for hire (rental here).

I have a friend who owns a vineyard outside Melbourne. He has a trailer, small by US standard and not lavishly equipped compared to a modestly priced, stateside.

Freeways are almost identical with US highways, although speed limit are strictly enforced with cameras (at least in Melbourne) where you can be fined on the spot.

I find it a nuisance to negotiate a roundabout other than driving on the "wrong" side of the road (they drive on the left.)
It is irritating going through a roundabout every time you come to an intersection. Even more so when you are driving a big rig because you are forced to almost make a full stop or your rig will tip over.

I did commute between Adelaide, Melbourne and Sydney by train but I drove a rental car whenever I'm in a big city. Their trains, I must admit, are very efficient.

You will not get a good deal in terms of foodstuff. Sydney is not popular as far as cost of living. In fact, some locals say it is the worst. Be ready to pay the equivalent of US$ 14.00 for a whole roasted chicken which only cost US$ 4.99 at Sams Club.

I can't say much about New Zealand. The closest I got to this beautiful country was Auckland Airport on my way to Brisbane.
