I spent 4 months tent camping in New Zealand back in 2009. The Kiwis are avid campers and there are many places to camp. Many of the paid campgrounds are called holiday parks and most have a communal kitchen. It's a great place to mingle with fellow campers, native and foreign. They also have several DOC (Department of Conservation) campgrounds, many of them free. Link to New Zealand DOC. Small camper vans are very popular with the tourists. I saw a few large motorhomes. Most were converted buses. I did see one large Winnebago while I was there. New Zealand is a great place. Fabulous scenery and the natives are friendly.
