Another Aussie here. You can hire motor homes in both Australia and Newzeland they only come with a cassette like toilets so you take this out and empty at campgrounds, very few dumpstations as not many have the inbuilt tanks. There are many places to "free camp" iover there, wiki camps app has free and paid sites, there are free camps booklets available in Australia. Most people shops at Woolworths or Coles. Petrol prices as said are expensive, the more remote the dearer it gets. Any more information just ask.
