OP here. We took the Viking River Cruise line's Rhine Getaway. We cruised from Basel, Switzerland to Amsterdam, Netherlands. We visited Switzerland, Germany, France and The Netherlands. After the cruise, we went to Bruges, Belgium for 3 additional nights.
All of the RV camps we photographed were along the Rhine River, mostly in Germany. A tour guide told us that 90% of the RVs in Europe were either German or Dutch. She said the people in those two countries LOVED to RV. There were so many RV camps we finally stopped getting photos of them. Every 20 to 30 minutes going down the river, we would see another one.
We really did enjoy the cruise and would recommend it. Personally, DW and I prefer to just take off on our own and go our own way rather than be tied to a tour schedule. Viking allowed some of that though.
In each port, we would get a guided tour of the town in the morning, go back to the ship for lunch (if we wanted, we could just stay in the town on our own), then there would be an optional afternoon tour (for extra charge) or you could strike out on your own. The only rule was to be back 15 minutes before the ship was scheduled to sail again.
We are planning to do the Viking River tour on the Yangtzee river in China in a couple of years.
Thanks Bobbo. Excellent report. We saw the river cruise boats in various parts of Germany as we went through. Some of those river towns are awesome. Part of our 9 week european adventure was with a Rick Steves Tour. We highly recommend them. We did the Europe through the back door tour. It really is the back door as we saw and did many things off the tourist track. Enjoy your next tour.
