We have spent 17 months over 6 years camping all over Europe. We like to be in or near cities and have found campgrounds to be of all kinds and sizes. I see no problem camping Walmart style when you can look out and see the Rhine. At least you are not looking at Walmart and you are in Germany and probably sent the day at a castle or two. In England, Wales and Scotland we often stayed with Camping and Caravanning Club campgrounds where the rule is 4 meters distance between units. North of Rome, London and Oslo we had beautiful roomy spots on bus and/or train lines for easy access to the city. In Stockholm and Hamberg we were jammed into very tight spots but also right on bus lines. But we weren't there to sit in our motorhome. And you never hear noisy generators or have to deal with anyone's campfire smoke - they are not allowed.
