Sorry to hear about your loss. I can't imagine going thru something like that. The silver lining though is that now you can re-invent yourselves and start fresh without looking back. When we retired and decided to move we thought we wanted to be on the Carolina coast, be it north or south, but wound up in the Smoky Mountains. I have no regrets. We are formerly from Michigan and East Tennessee is a lot like MI. but has a milder climate and still has the seasonal changes, which we enjoy, just not the cold and amounts of snow our former state had. You should look at what you both enjoy as to climate and activity offerings an area can offer you, then go and stay there for a month. I think that amount of time gives you a good idea of an areas "feel". A week just isn't enough to do that in. The volunteering and camp hosting idea is a good one. try it, you might like it.
