OP again. We definitely plan to use public transit and uber to get around in the city. Night visits to monuments sounds great. We're experienced city visitors, but are a little freaked out by the reports of subway violence in NYC - do you feel that riding the trains, etc in the evenings (or anytime) is particularly ill-advised? Of course, we're always careful and on the lookout for suspicious stuff...
And, while I've got your attention, we plan to visit Delaware, via Annapolis/Hwy 50. Probably just for a long day and evening. DE is the last state on my list - I've visited all of the other 49! My thought was to drive across the state, maybe to Rehoboth Beach, and then back to Annapolis, maybe by a slightly different route. I haven't yet researched the area, but any ideas? With such a short time, my goal is to see the countryside, maybe a few small towns, etc.
If you are kicking bucket list type items, consider connecting De with an eastern shore tour. Do US 13 down from De to the Chesapeake Bay bridge tunnel and add in Chincoteague national seashore refuge and the Sika Elk as well as touring Wallops Island NASA facilities while seeing the homeplace of "Misty of Chincoteague" and on the Maryland end of the island you have a good satte park to go with the National Park, depending on whether you need W&E hookups. but you will get wild horses in your campground if not on your site.
