I understand why GM made this safety catch mechanism....to keep the spare from just falling out if the cable rusts through or just breaks, like I had happen on one of my 99 trucks. Nothing like seeing the spare from the rearview mirror sliding uncontrolled behind the truck at 55 mph going into the oncoming lane of traffic.
Yes the safety catch is a real pain....but consider the situation from above before passing complete negative judgement.
