I read about this issue just after I bought my 2012 Silverado,, Went out lowered the spare,,made sure it was the right size tire,aired it up,cleaned it off, Covered it in a large heavy plastic lawn and garden bag then sprayed the lock mechanism with white lithium grease and ran it back up there,, Just a note,, yes I did provide a hole in the bag for the cable and lock assembly and in the bottom for drainage, the bag helps keep tire clean, I did this on the last two pick ups I owned,, in the event you need the spare,, you pull or tear the bag off and the tire is fairly clean and doesn't get you as messy!!Also the bag will help keep dirt and junk out of the lock mechanism.
I try to make this a Fall Maintenance ritual,I also spray the jack shaft to make it work more smoothly.
