I cut the latch off and use a piece of chain around the bracket above and through the rim holes to catch the tire if the cable breaks. Simple and the tire stays where it is supposed to be.
GMC and Chevy trucks have been the same truck with grill work, hoods and badging being the only differences since back in the '50s at least. Same fenders, doors, cabs, beds, drive trains, engines, etc.
