Geez you guys, I think I'm catching this rustaphobia. My frame is rusty but the underbelly is clad aluminum. If I got under there and cleaned the frame, painted it, and polished the aluminum, I'd probably blind myself, lol.
If I do decide to clean it up, this would be the drill (salt or not)---Clean with a surfactant (soap). Spray a phosphoric acid based product on the rusty bits (I like Jasco Prepaint Conditioner or water softener cleaner for tough jobs). Prime with a rust reforming/metal primer. Paint. Maybe I'll tackle it when I do the tank enclosure.
