I understand your concerns about reliable communication while on the road.
When we were planning a trip to Alaska a few years ago, I looked into sat phones & sat Internet equipment & plans. BTW, we didn't end up going, but I think I would have rented a sat phone.
Currently, the
Iridium Extreme 9575 Satellite Phone appears to fit the bill . . . it's rugged, has a built-in GPS, and an SOS button. It slices, it dices, it's expensive.
Figure $50/
week rental + a service plan (starting @ $55/month), so about $300/month.
Finally, since you have a few months before you go, you might want to rent a phone for a week & see how it goes.
