When we are going to be offshore (transferring yachts, crossing the pond, extended sailing) we use Iridium GO! its small device that lets you connect your mobile phone and other devices to satelite data and voice networks. It cost us about 1200 EUR (our HQ is based in London) and we pay around 200 EUR service fee. Plus per MB or voice second which is bloody expensive so to be used only in emergencies.
So mo sure about US availability and service plans but i found this so device is available and try to check for the service plans. I find this ideal tool (better than phone) as you can in emergency do emails/sms etc.
We will be taking our one with us in March when we start FT in 5er :-)
