You could also look into something like a Spot satellite messenger. Not sure if cost vs a phone.
Or to he!! With the phone, sounds like a great trip. Take me. I’ll change the tires for free....but I might drink more beer then the phone costs!
I had a spot. nice when they came out, had the first gen, then the second gen, then the one that worked with bluetooth they discontinued, but the capabiligties are completely outdated now. the reception improved, but not the features. First, you can ONLY send a text, one of 3 you preprogram. One of which is emergency. NO way to know it was received. No way to send a response to a spot. Second, it will be sent to a preprogrammed list of people, no way to add when out of cell service. Third, it often took 30-60 minutes to get a sat fix and send.
There is IMHO a reason they are being sold on "sale" a lot now by spot. updated to the Garmin Inreach explorer, When I dropped my spot service they offered a reduced rate and asked why. I said. Garmin Inreach explorer....... 2 way communication, on the fly messages, on the fly addresses the response...... we hear that a lot.
I still had the spot messenger along with the inreach when we did a cruise around south america coast to coast. Inreach had reception every time I checked, kids could track us at will. Spot, maybe 50 percent of the time it could get a sat.
It's better than nothing, but IMHO it's worth the extra $ to go with the inreach or a good sat phone. And in an emergency, with the inreach the help can be continually communicating with you for status, location, what to do etc.
