The combination plug patch is a one-piece unit that if installed properly works very well. A regular patch will probably hold also, if installed properly. This all assumes that the hole was in the tread area. Holes in the sidewall should not be repaired.
Had a screw in a tire on my F150 in the first month I owned it (that's how I learned the truck had a TPMS), they used the plug-patch combo, it was fine for many thousands of miles. Around here, most tire stores do patches and rotations for free. Gives them a chance to look at your vehicle and find other things wrong with it.
