The plug patch and patch both work well. Have had them for years and no problems.
The plug is a problem because if it forms a good seal on the tread rubber but does not get a complete seal on the inside it will let air leak between the tread and the case. That can push the tread off the case making an air bubble and the tire comes apart. I have seen this many times over the year and lost a number of good tires.
