SD fuel tax, registration, sales excise tax rising April 1

Our governor has signed 2015 SB1 legislation authorizing state fuel tax increase to .24c from .18c/ gallon, vehicle registration fees rise on average 20%, excise tax on vehicles rise from 3% to 4%.
The last increase in road use/ fuel tax was in '93
The new funds are primarily earmarked to counties to offset inflation since that time for bridge and local road maintenance.

  • where I live in NY we not only pay about .60 a gallon tax but we are hit with NYC transit surcharge of about 55% of registration cost. A friend does excavating and the 1 year reg of his 30 ton trailer was going to be 950.00....registered in Maine instead 95 bucks for 5 years.
  • When Charlie Crist was Governor of Fl. he double the tags, drivers License and registration fees. When Governor Scott took over he cut the fees back about 1/3 to 1/2 Then Crist ran again last time and was soundly beat just as badly as when Scott ran against him...When the economy takes a dive Govt. wants to take (and does) more from the working persons back pocket instead of cutting back (should start with the politicians salary and benefits but it doesn't)
Alabama has some decent gas prices, with my flying J card I paid 2.08 per gallon today and living this close to the Al line guess where we shop...
  • Nice side effect of that legislation is that it increases the interstate speed limit in South Dakota to 80 miles per hour.
