Sears garage door app for smart phones....

Every time we leave to go on a camping trip we always get down the road and wonder if we closed our garage door. One time we were over 100 miles from home and my wife said I do not think I closed the garage door...OOPS......my wife was able to call a neighbor that was home and she reported nope wide open......at least we were able to give her the code to close it. So when I saw that Sears sells a kit that attaches to the garage door that will let you open and close the garage door from a smart phone plus it will tell you how long it has been open....Now my question is has any one tried this if so is there a monthly user fee?.....I have tried other sources to answer my question....

  • I like the idea of the app.

We have a silly little saying when we pull out of the driveway.
We say" the garage door is coming down" as we push the button.
When my dad turned 80 yrs old, he started doing this to help him remember to close the garage door.

With all of that said, I also have two other kids who drive and it would be nice for me to be able to check the door status remotely.

  • I owned a garage door company, installed garage doors and automatic openers
for over 10 years. My advice to owners was always "Watch the door go down, that way you know that it went all the way to the floor".The safety reverse should engage if anything gets in the way of the door going down.
I have replaced many, many garage doors that had the opener/closer clutch system adjusted too tight, causing it to override the safety reverse and destroyed the door.
I have seen pets that have been injured by the door. That door is a large machine when connected to an automatic opener/closer,I would not advise closing the door when you can not see it.
  • Why not just add 'close garage door' to your checklist before leaving with the RV. :)

My wife and I installed a Sears (craftsman) garage door opener last year and have the iPhone app installed. It works great! It tells you how long the door has been opened or closed. I can't tell you how many times I have circled around after leaving the house to see if I closed the door. Not anymore!

The Garage Butler is one of the best buys we have made for our stick and brick house. We leave ours set on 10 minutes so if DW says "I forgot to close the garage door," I answer "That's OK, it will close in 10 minutes anyway."

    Great peace of mind.

When we moved 4 years ago, we took the Garage Butler down before listing the house because we didn't want to risk the buyers listing it in the contract to stay with the house.

We disable our garage door openers (they have a function especially for this) so we're sure they're closed when we leave for a trip. Our doors also have steel dead bolts. Nobody's getting in that way at least. ;)

    ditto X2.
slide the dead bolt disable the opener.

IMHO I don't think I would want anything iphone attached to the security of my home. Just saying.
