Security Issues and Safes for RVs

well, that was supposed to link to tinypic instead of becoming an 8 x 10. perhaps a mod can fix?

A safe is a target for a would be thief. If you have a drawer that pulls out all the way and their is a space below it then that is a good place to put items where there are not going to be easily found.

Thieves are looking for something that they can easily take to a flea market and sell and of course credit cards and ID's and hand guns and similar items.

Me thinks you're all worrying too much. We've been full-timing 16+ years and travel constantly. We stay in public parks or boondock in the national forests or on BLM land. Everything we own is carried with us. We have never had any problems and in our full-timing large circle, have not heard of anyone having a break-in. Of course, we don't carry gold bars or the Declaration of Independence!

I put in one of these because we do travel with stuff we care about.



It is a Protex HD-20. I mounted it in the wardrobe slide. I got it at

Both locks on our door use the same key, storage compartment door can be opened just as quick or quicker with a pry bar. I have considered a small gun safe through bolted to the floor in a difficult place to try and remove. If a real thief wants it he will get it. :)

Stay in roughly 30+ campgrounds (private/public/parks etc.) each year for the past 6 yrs. all over the USA.

Everything we own is with us.

Security......HA! we live in a box that has cheap doors & locks. That is a fact and I've never considered putting a $50 lock on a $2 door.

Important papers have been digitized and stored/backed up.
Copies have been made and left with family

Everything else of value in rig is covered via insurance.

There is not a rv compartment door, entry door or bolted in safe that I couldn't get into with small hammer, flat blade screw driver or pry bar.
The lock may hold but that door, door frame, subfloor etc. won't hold up.

That is just reality when dealing with rvs.

I don't worry over some one breaking in to the rv any more than I worried about break-ins when we had a S&B.

Just checked 'Dicks' out and they have a safe (similar to hotel rooms) for $80. It has a code lock system with a key backup if the batteries fail. It appears pretty solid and looks like an easy install. Now, the question is where to install? It's big enough (14Hx10Wx10Deep) to store a video cam, other items of similar size plus a little extra but too small for a laptop.

that is not the one, I looked at it and got the one I did. I would guess about 8 x 10 x 15 or so with a key lock. I threw the box away so can't refer to that. will check on their web site. just checked the web site and it wasn't there. will look the next time I am at Dicks which won't be in the immediate future. it will hold a digital SLR/lenses/etc.
