MrWizard,
Inside storage here in West Michign is real cheap if you do your research. Many places have decent storage buildings spacees for rent or farm pole buildings or un-used large factory buildings that are rented as storage space because the owners had either closed a business or don't use the building anymore now or have built a new larger building and/or consolidated branches into one much larger building which of course meant needing a larger plot of land anyway. So, they rent out slace in thier buildong because renting storage spaces pays for the building yearly expenses plus some and they still own the building and land if needed in the future. Smart!
They are unheated, of course storage buildings, but fine inside storage for boats and RV's etc in winter and winter use vehicles and snowmobiles etc in summer. The going rate is usually between $170 and $200 total for 6 months for an item 8' wide X 30' long (240 sq feet) and you can get to your stored item anytime during daylight hours. I know this is fact as we rent 2 spaces this size for 2 of our trailered boats each winter as my pole building at home is already full. Some people store year around, their boats or RV's, and pay for 12 months or double the 6 mo rate. Most do not have any electric available for renters and you must to have your item insured and they require a copy of your policy paid in full for the period you rent the space. They don't allow you to do any repair work on your item inside the buildings as it's just storage.
Most places keep an aisleway down the center of each bay about 12' to 16' wide and all items are stored at about a 60 degree angle on each side with no more than 2' between items nd marked by white lines but that is plenty. Back in, hook on, and drive out carefully. Reverse to putwheeled item back in. Being on an angle makes it real easy. Length of each space wanted from the center aisle back determines which bay they asign you. If I remember correctly, the max is a 50' long numbered space.
Might this work as an option for people wanting to store RV's in the LA area or on the West Coast???
Storage complexes normally seen are very high priced and most are not big enough units or high enough for a 30' or larger RV or boat anyway so we avoid them.
