Get the app Zoom Weather and learn how to access all the information it can provide you. If you tap on the box with the arrow attracted to it you will get a lot of info on each cell in a line of thunderstorms. By slowing down it kept me out of a cell that made the road in front of me white with hail. Without it I would have hunkered down and road out a line of thunderstorms instead of shooting the gap between two nasty cells and continuing on. When the weather is good I use it as a moving map.
I would use a more southern route... I-20 or even I-10 if things are not looking good in front of you. Once you get to the problem area I would get an early start and push through the couple hundred miles of bad weather before noon. You do not want to wait until the kids are out of school before doing CA.
