Being a plumber, this is not hard for me to imagine at all. I see it all of the time. It can happen for a couple of different reasons -- if the volume of sewage entering the lower part of the system exceeds the capacity limits of the shower drain, it will start to come out of the next-highest drain, too. Also, when the shower drain gets clogged with sewage, which it eventually will, the sewage will come out of the next highest drain.
