Sewage valve stuck open

Hi I'm new here and new to RV-ing so I'm sure I will be asking many questions in the future- please bear with my ignorance.

I just got married and my husband and I bought a fifth wheel RV; this is our first home (living in it fulltime!). We have it parked on a friend's property for now, as we don't have anything to tow it with (we are looking for a truck). The sewage line is hooked up to a septic tank in the ground, and had been working smoothly for a while....

This last time we opened up the black water valve to dump the sewage, it opened and everything drained okay, but then we couldn't get the valve shut again. We tried pushing and pulling and tapping (lightly) with a hammer, but the lever-stick-thing won't go back in. So we decided to leave it open, figuring better open than shut.

Well, the electronic gauge (with three lights, SO VERY ACCURATE *ahem*) tells us now that the black water tank is filling up. Which suggests to me that it's clogged and not draining properly. We have tried flushing large amounts of water down the toilet, leaving it alone with a full bottle of enzyme treatment sitting without use for two weeks, blasting hose water into the small inlet thingie for the black water tank, and draining the full grey water tank with the hopes that the suction will pull on the black water, all to no avail.

I'm about to get a hand auger from the hardware store and run it down the toilet to see if I can loosen anything up- any suggestions?
  • That's a bad one. Forget the gauge indication. Can you see down the toilet (with the water shut off) to actually see the level?
There is a product made by Valterra called RV Hydroflush which is an adapter that connects to the sewer outlet. (Camping World has it. I like the 45 degree model) It has a hose connection that allows one to send water BACK into the Black Tank to break up anything that might be clogging the outlet and help in the flushing procedure when dumping normally. A sewer hose is connected to the device and it's clear plastic so you can see when the outflow is clear.
  • I don't have an answer, but I wanted to say welcome to the forum and congratulations on your 5er.

I am more familiar with valves that won't open than I am with valves that won't close. I wonder if something solid has gotten into the valve and jammed? It won't be pleasant, but I would consider taking the stinky slinky off and pushing a rod up to see if you can push an obstruction back out of the valve. If that doesn't work, I would replace the valve. It is an easy job and the valves are not expensive.

Also, I would get that fixed. While an open gray tank valve doesn't lead to problems, an open black tank valve leads to the dreaded poop pyramid.

I live in the Memphis area. If I can help, I will be glad to try.
  • Welcome to the Forum...and congrats on your marriage.

Get the valve to close asap. find a way to fix it even if you have to replace it or put a new valve on the end of the pipe. It's not hard to do.

Leaving the "black tank" valve open will cause you a huge "pile" of grief. The solids will build up in the tank, solidify and plug up the whole system..

Only dump the tank when it is at least 2/3 full or more..use lots of water..
