Shaky pole style table leg - updated

I know I read on here in the past where folks complained about the shaky pole style table legs. Didn't pay too much attention since we didn't have one. Well, now we do and I absolutely hate it. It is a free standing table in our B where the sides flip up to make it bigger and it sits on a pole that goes into the floor. It's tippy and we're always spilling drinks and plates even want to slide off the table if we aren't careful to keep it straight.

The pole seems to fit tightly in the bracket under the table, but is looser where it goes into the bracket in the floor.

Anyone come up with a solution for some way to stabilize it?
  • First thing is make sure it's the fit of the leg and not the piece that screws to the floor. Mine was cracked and not easily noticed. Also make sure it doesn't bottom out in the socket, which isn't likely but... I went after my leg with a hammer and vise to get it to fit the socket tighter. It works better but it's one of the reasons I hate these dinette things.

Odds are the pole itself is the issue. Harbor Freeight sells a device that is designed to expand exhaust pipes.. I believe the largest one may work for you too but it's not easy to use.

A shim. (even a couple sheets of paper) may help.
