Shortage of RV transporters.

As long as individuals are willing to do jobs that pay very little there is no incentive to pay more. It's like any market, the supply of drivers must still be exceeding the demand or they would pay more and pass the cost on to the final consumer.

NO you can't sleep in your truck, unless it has a D.O.T. approved sleeper. And I had a $275 fine from Texas D.O.T. to prove it plus a hotel bill and 8 hrs of down time. I pulled for Horizon transport. Unles you can do some very creative longs (illeagle) it is very hard to make a good living. If you are single or yor spouse rides with you plan on spending lots of time alone.
Pay is for only loaded miles, 99% of the time you have to drive back unloaded.

Someone said 40 cents a mile while pulling, it is really closer to about 75 cents.

As long as you log off duty and not sleeper you are perfectly legal to sleep in your pick up as of February 2013 (IIRC). If you were fined by Texas DOT you should have fought it. I have been doing it for the past 1.5 years and seen many inspections and have never had an issue.
I do agree with your comments regarding this being a difficult way to make a living though.

The Transporter I work for had over 100 trailers parked in Northern Indiana last year. They have over 300 this year.

I once thought this could be a nice part time job until I ran the numbers, after calculating the fixed costs,(deprecation, insurance, tax (licenses),interest and potential repairs) and then paying the variable costs to recover the fixed costs, it would no longer be a part time job.

The biggest thing is if the trailer is wrecked in anyway no pay, and you have to pull it back to the factory. Had one take light hail damage on front panels about 200 miles to dealer, 1600 miles from factory. Dealership said they would take it BUT Factory manager says bring it back. It basically cheaper from them not to pay the driver and repair at the factory then allow the dealership to take it and repair it.

There is a lot of trailers siting near factory in dispatch lots because not many are willing to drive in bad weather and risk their own truck and weeks wages for the Trailer Companies transport contract.

I had a trailer I delivered to Saskatoon when it was under -20 out. I was told I had to wash it. I told them I was worried about getting water in the electric jack. Just go wash it.
After wash back to the dealer, The jack wouldn't work. THEY CHARGED ME FOR THE JACK.

As I indicated before- I agree with greenenvy1; there must be a way around it as all 4 drivers I interacted with were setup that way.

I also didn't get the feeling that CDLs were required unless you were pulling a GCWR of 26,000.
