When it comes to paying to get towed & guess it depends on the circumstances. The pictured case was at a bluegrass festival at an upstate NY ski hill. It was all dry camping around a field. The property owner was there with his tractor & expected problems because of the rain.
We got stuck at the EAA at Oskosh. Again hay field camping & rain turned it into a mudfest in the the CG lanes. They had a couple of huge 8 wheeled John Deeres dragging people out of the muck. We got ourselves out just before the tractor arrived. Better for the promoters of such events to pay for tractors at such events & get people out happy for free than make them pay & risk them not returning to the event another year because of having to pay if the camping area turns into a mud bog.
Got stuck in a PA SP site. Rain again. By using boards I had myself within 6' of solid ground when the park small tractor happened by & a short easy pull later we were on solid ground again.
I don't think 4WD would have helped in either of those cases. A locking diff on the dually might have helped. A manual trans might have helped too. You can feel what is going on at the wheels. Oh well. I like a challenge.
