I much prefer reserving a specific site over first come, first serve. We rarely are able to leave early for a trip due to work, so we routinely arrive in the early evening and would always be relegated to less desirable sites. To me, reserving specific sites is much more fair. Everyone has an equal opportunity to reserve a site. Plus there is so much less stress knowing where you need to go when you get there rather than having to drive all over the park picking just the right site, or more specifically for us, deciding which is the best of the less desirable ones.
We have a list of sites for every park we have stayed in (mostly FL state parks) that we feel are good sites for us. Unless the park is just booked up, we can always find a site we like. We have a list for other parks as well so at least we can ask the ranger if certain sites are still available when we arrive, although it is typically after the ranger has already left.
