- LowsuvExplorerWe live in the center of Oregon where we have to travel two lane US highways and the nearest Interstate is 140 miles away .
Interstates have more straights than 2 lane US highways .
This is further complicated because we have to climb over the mighty Cascade Mountain Range to get to the population centers which are along Interstate 5 .
The most frequent problem is that 15 % of the people that live along Interstate 5 automatically slow down when they get onto the two lane US Highways such as US 26 , US 22 , US 20 and US 97 .
Those folks impede the progress of the Central Oregon residents by travelling under the 55 mph basic speed in Oregon .
The problem is that the folks that crash are not the folks impeding the flow of traffic .
Instead , the folks that crash are those that have to pass those impedants on the 2 lane highways that we have .
Life is not fair .
The impedants take the high road in their argument , saying the other guy was going too fast .
The other guy was content going 60-62 which is the normal speed on US Highways in Oregon .
The other guy only had to go 75+ in order to pass the impedants .
The wrong guy crashes because the impedant chose to be the lowest common denominator driving our 2 lane highways .
A slow moving vehicle sign will not help .
Pulling over when a line forms behind you will .
That actually will happen on occasion .
It is refreshing when it does . - afraid_of_bearsExplorerSome people in this thread seem to be in a big rush.
When I'm travelling with the trailer, I'm definitely slower than when I travel without the trailer. I'm usually close to the speed limit, but more often than not, I'm under. According to some on this thread, that automatically makes me an inconsiderate driver and one that is unsafe and should be off the road. I've really got to wonder about these folks that demand that others drive no slower than the posted speed limit. Probably the same folks that feel they have to drive 110kmh at night during winter snow storms. Gotta remember, it's the posted limit...
As for the motorhome holding up traffic that wouldn't pull over, I followed him with all my lights and siren on one day on the way to a rescue call. I can still remember the kid waving at the big firetruck from the back window. What the driver was thinking, who knows. - winnietreyExplorerdelete
- VeebyesExplorer IIGet a little too close behind me & you will see a custom bumper sticker that says
NO, I AM NOT IN A HURRY
On the serious side, no, I am not one of those doing 55 in a 65 zone. I am more likely to be set at around 63/64, the speed the truck gets into & stays in top gear comfortably.
What really pulls my chain are those who are close enough to push but don't use the opportunity to pass when they get it. Then there are the dawdlers who crawl past where there are overtaking lanes holding up everyone else behind them like nobody is there. These poor suckers have to wait till we get to the next passing lane.
I like the Texas habit. When you see it is safe to be passed you drive on the shoulder giving good visibility & they shoot past, always waving thanks as they do so. - TargaExplorerAh nevermind..

I try and pull over as soon as humanly possible to let someone pass. I don't like following a slow moving RV in my car. So pretty easy to understand how the other guy feels.
Wierd thing though, and the sword cuts both ways here, I would say only about 10% of drivers will give you a thank you wave, horn or tail light flash
Same here. When I get onto the two lane roads I'm trying to pull over where I can to let people pass. When I'm in my fun car going through the mountains it drives me CRAZY when slow traffic doesn't use turn-outs, so I at least try to pay my part forward.
I remember following a MH years ago along the Blue Ridge Parkway and they just wouldn't pull over, even with 6 cars lined up. Couldn't figure that one out. Maybe they were so white knuckled from the drive they didn't dare check a mirror.... - westendExplorerDon, I'd get some of that reflective tape and make my own visual attractive display.
To the guys that are raising their own blood pressure because of slow moving vehicles---get over it. The truth is that there is nowhere you need to be that passing a slow vehicle causes any latency in your travels. If you're slamming on the brakes when you encounter a slow vehicle, you're driving too fast for the conditions and the physics of your vehicle.
I'm sure that Pianotuna is driving in the range of speed of most vehicles on the road. His pulling over for other motorists shows that he's conscious of those on the road. - PennStateTPDExplorerIn California the max speed limit for a vehicle towing anything is 55mph. On weekend outings here in southern California I normally do about 15-25mph on the freeway, but then I am just keeping up with the flow of traffic.
- popeyemthExplorerWhat you can't see in that picture is the 8 inch tall Gumby and POKEY figures in the window beside the door. They get just as many laughs as the sign :)
