small pickups for flat towing

Am new to Open Roads and am looking for advice on which small pickup of the following adapts best for flat towing: Ford Ranger, Chev Colorado, GMC Canyon or Dodge Dakota. Prefer extended vs crew cab, 4WD w/Neutral, AT & tow package. Any thoughts or suggestions will be appreciated. Thanks - Arnie

I do not know what Ranger did with 4x4 AT. We wanted a truck as toad and I looked at 4 cyl extended cab manual transmission Ranger, Tacoma and Frontier. We went Frontier because
    1. Tacoma, first choice going into this, had stopped approving RV towing for any Tacoma model or option
    2. Ranger ride was terrible
    3. Frontier approved MT for towing in 2WD or 4x4
Problem is this: Used to be, if you had a Transfer Case with Manual Neutral, you could tow an MT or an AT truck. But Tacoma and Frontier cheapened their TC's. They have 2H, 4H and 4L and that's it. No more Neutral. So it comes down to "you tow it in Neutral if 2WD or 2H AND Neutral if 4x4, which come out to the same thing.
The Chevy/GMC (before they went on hiatus then brought out the present mid-size-plus trucks) had an electronic TC that you could shift to neutral. That let you tow an automatic.
New Canyon is bigger, heavier, and by the time you work your way up through the options to get the electronic transfer case, it's a high dollar V6 AT truck.

Check the weight. I would never pull what it says my MH is capable of.

Staying around 3,000lbs is the way to go with a toad. Unless you like struggling up even the smallest incline hills on the interstate.
  • 2012 is the last year of the true, SMALL, 4 down towable with auto trans, Colorado and Canyon.
They are VERY difficult to find in good condition and low miles. Even more difficult to find in extended cab. Dakotas are the same.. almost impossible to find.
The new ones are almost the size of a 1500.
    Good luck!
  • Sounds like you're asking about towing your small truck behind a motorhome perhaps. The "Dingy Towing" forum would be a better place for that question I think.
