Small Propane Cylinder

I would like to know if anyone is using a small (5 lb.) propane cylinder to replace the one pound throw aways. If so, do you have trouble getting them refilled for a reasonable cost?
  • I have what I believe to be a 7# cylinder and never had any issues with getting it filled. Use a real propane shop and it should be easy.
    Canyon
  • Not quite the same but I have a 10 lb cylinder that I love. In fact it's my second one as the first was stolen well after it was expired so probably a blessing in disguise.

I've never had trouble filling at any local place that refills bbq cylinders.
  • I have 2 small 5 ponders and use them for my outdoor stove.
When they are empty I just get them filled at Costco along with my big 20 pounder.
  • I use the 5lb cylinders for the BBQ when camping, nope never a problem or an excess charge in filing them, Many places here give a discount once your total fill goes about 30lbs or so.

Biggest issue is the cost. 20lb cylinders are a big "loss leader" and a "dime a dozen" 5lb, 30lb etc double or more the cost for a new cylinder

Still way cheaper in the long run vs. 1lb disposables
  • I have two of the 5 pound cylinders. Can get them filled anywhere.
  • Been using one for a number of years now. Much cheaper to use than the disposables. Always keep a couple of disposables on hand in case the 5lb runs out & a refill is not handy.

The only problem experienced is that occasionally the valve sticks. Nothing that a couple of whacks with a hammer can't fix. Nothing likes to be hit.

That is not a small cylinder problem. It is a cylinder problem. The small cylinder uses exactly the same valve as the 20# and 30# bottles.
