Yes, if you can get by with a car that tiny, then trailering it on one of those small, collapsible trailers is definitely the way to go.
However, most folks need much more room and seating capacity in their towed vehicles than the smart cars provide. Many of us need to be able to seat 4-5 people (comfortably!) That pretty well rules the smart car out.
If Texas Trailers would make a collapsible trailer that could handle regular size cars and still fold up so its out of the way at your campsite..I'd order one TODAY, and put all my 4 down towing equipment (towbar) up for sale. Definitely a lot to be said for the ability to back up when towing.
